Interesting facts about me

-I love the Renaissance.
-I sew. Yes, as in clothing. I'm currently finishing up on my dress for the Renaissance festival. :)
-There are currently four stories that I've thought of working on, but never can seem to get right.
-My absolute favorite foods are either cheese or bread. Or chips. I'm a die-hard Tex-Mex fan.
-I've gotten to the point that I can spot a Sue from 100 yards. Mary Sues, beware!
-I'm the Head Screener of NFFR. :) It's such a blessing to be able to read some of these fabulous stories! It almost makes up for the not-so-fabulous ones. ;)
-I can identify sentence structures at the drop of a hat, and I know my grammar and sentence diagramming, too! That was a compound sentence, by the way. Both clauses were pattern VII (NP1, transitive vb, NP2 (DO)).
-I'm studying to be an English teacher.
-My favorite animal is a cat. I plan to one day get 2 kittens from an animal shelter. If one of them is black, he will be named Elmo.
-I'm a planner. As in, I've got my four year plan, and so far I'm right on track!

Hey Kate, can I ask you a grammar question?

I just left a post that had this sentence in it: "If this was a story I was reading on my own without trying to screen, I would've quit after two chapters."

Now here's my question. It's subjunctive, so that first 'was' should have been a 'were', but what about the second? I tried and it didn't sound right - though heck, what do I know? Thus the question.

P.S. - Darn it! Sorry I missed you in the chatroom.

    LOL- Yay grammar!

Well, your second 'was' is actually an auxilary to 'reading', which makes that 'was' part of a participle. Generally, you want parallelism in your sentences, however, my understanding of participles is so long as you remain in the same general tense, such as past or present, you're generally good to go. If we're looking at the prescriptive grammar of this sentence, though, I have to add this: 'without trying to screen' should have been set off with commas, since it's a non-restrictive adverbial modifier. ;)
